Ink Review #2868: IWI Grain Full

Today’s ink is IWI Grain Full from the Colors of Nature collection. My sample of ink came from Vanness Pens but they no longer have any in stock. I looked around but can’t find it for sale anywhere at the moment.

The color:

Grain Full is a medium honey ochre.

*For my swab cards I use a Col-o-ring by Skylab Letterpress, a medium Pilot Ishime and a Mabie Todd Swan.

Swabs:

In large swabs on Tomoe River paper the ink has some really interesting shading.

Writing samples:

Let's take a look at how the ink behaves on fountain pen friendly papers: Rhodia, Tomoe River, and Leuchtturm, as well as cheap copy paper.

*For my writing samples I use:

Dry time: 5 seconds

Water resistance: Medium

Feathering: Medium

Show through: Medium

Bleeding: Low-just a few spots.

Other properties: medium shading, no sheen, and no shimmer.

On 20 lb copy paper the ink had some bleeding and feathering in the larger nib sizes.

Comparison Swabs:

Grain Full is similar to Ferris Wheel Press Autumn in Auburn. Click here to see the brown inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a TWSBI Eco Transparent Orange with a medium nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has an average flow.

Overall, I love the color, shading and quick dry time, but there’s way too much feathering for me. I don’t need a full bottle of this one.

Comparison Swabs:

Document Red is similar to Akkerman China Red. Click here to see the red inks together.

Longer Writing:

I used a Sailor Pro Gear Slim Supernova Red with a broad nib on a Taroko Enigma notebook. The ink has a slightly wet flow.

Overall, I like the color. The flow is a bit wet, which causes the ink to spread out a bit as it dries. It has some bleeding, mainly in the flex nib and swab. It dries pretty quick and has high water resistance. It’s okay but not fabulous. I’ll pass on a full bottle of this one.
